Avira AntiVir is a free antivirus package that can effectively scan different file types and keep your machine free from Trojans, viruses and spywares. It is good for the low budget consumer and already very popular in Germany. Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic is the free version of the paid-for product Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Premium. The free software does not have the option of keeping infected files in quarantine, i.e. keeping them aside for later inspection, but you can determine whether files should be repaired, deleted, or deleted only if repair fails. You can also set the types of programs (i.e. malware and spyware) to be removed and which heuristic detection techniques are to be invoked. If you are not comfortable with all the configuration, you can directly go for a full scan. The full system scanner generates a thorough report which shows all details about the system, program versions, settings, and scanned files. An online forum has technical support where you can also submit reports obtained from the scan. The Classic edition detected 92% of viruses and malware in the PC Pro Lab's test.
An on-access scanner is provided by AntiVir's Guard module. If you double click the tray icon, the scanner displays the current settings, current status and name of the most recently scanned files, although this feature is limited to certain file types.
AntiVir does not scan mail attachments until they are saved on your hard disk. It also cannot detect adware or spyware. The commercial version includes some extra features such as additional spyware protection, aware blocking and access to a faster update server. It also provides integrated POP3 scanning, which is fast and effective, but does not flag infected messages.
Avira AntiVir is light in CPU and memory usage, and the full scan is fast and effective. The program updates its database daily and protects your machine against new threats, but each time the AntiVir database is updated you get notified and asked to upgrade to the paid Premium version. If you find this annoying, which you will, you can prevent this by setting a security policy to prevent avnotify.exe from running.
AntiVir's interface is simple and easy to use. It provides options for what to do with infected files and what types of files are to be inspected for a full scan. You can also configure the scan and update schedules.
The free version is good at keeping your machine free from viruses, and the paid-for edition adds good functionalities like spyware and adware detection, and POP3 scanning. As a low-budget product it is fast, effective and low on resources, but you can find much better options available on the market for a little extra cost.
