Bullguard Internet Security came into the market of couple of years back and rapidly gained market share through pre-installation into new PCs. It has antivirus from BitDefender, plus anti-spyware, anti-spam and a firewall from Sygate to provide comprehensive protection, although it still does not have an anti-phishing tool, and so does not provide web filtering capabilities. The company provides 5GB of online storage space for you to keep your back-up files.
The suite has performed about average on test labs. In the PC Pro's test lab, it achieved an 86% overall malware detection rate, courtesy of a capable antivirus module using the BitDefender engine. It was one of only five packages to identify the PEPatch virus and the KillAV trojan, although it was one of only six to miss the Nilage virus. It has average RAM usage, but during scanning CPU usage goes as high as 95%.
This easy-to-set up tool works with Windows XP and Vista. After installing the software, you get various virus updates and a full scan. The suite's default settings are alright, but at the same time customizing the configuration is easy. You can have more control over security settings and let the program know which applications should not be barred inadvertently. Custom configuration is straightforward and easy to follow. The firewall can be set up automatically as well as manually.
Bullguard Internet Security 8.0, like all other internet security suites has most of the required features; such as antivirus, antispyware and a firewall. The antivirus and antispyware applications integrate with Outlook, Outlook Express and Thunderbird. It scans all inbound and outbound mails and checks files before opening. A full scan takes more time, but does not affect regular work as it runs in the background. Backup facilities allow you to save important documents online, and the 5GB of storage provided can be extended with a small payment.
The Bullguard interface is reassuringly laid out, with large buttons down the left-hand side for selecting specific functions and a tabbed adjustment pane to show the status and adjust settings on the other side. It's very easy to get at the settings needed to customise the program to a particular computer.
The suite performed either average or above average in different labs and is gaining popularity steadily, although the lack of anti-phishing features is a notable omission that could leave your PC vulnerable. The company provides 24/7 technical support.
