Lavasoft is one of the oldest vendors in the anti-spyware business, and Ad-aware SE is one of its most popular anti-spyware programmes, known in the market for its high standards, regular updates, real-time protection and efficient detection capability. Ad-aware SE is available in two versions: the free Ad-aware SE Personal version quarantines and removes every kind of spyware on your computer; while the Ad-aware SE Plus is the paid-for version that provides real-time protection, automatic updates and blocks adware or other spywares. Both editions are highly capable in detection and removal, although Lavasoft's online technical support is poor, if free. The Personal version does not support email enquiries.
Adware SE provides a sleek interface with custom skins to suit your tastes, is light on resources and scans quickly, but is more of an expert's spyware kit than a home user's. It can unload running process modules to combat DLL injection threats, and its online 'Threat Assessment Chart' service provides detailed information about potential hazards. Among other high-end features are add-ons for viewing Layers Service Providers, where you can check for malicious code inserted in the Windows TCP/IP chain. It also provides viewers for detailed file information and a hex viewer for inspecting the spyware. Its Code Sequence Identification (CSI) technology helps in detecting unknown variants for known threats and its Ad-Watch module provides real-time monitoring for suspicious processes.
Downloading and installing Ad-aware SE Personal takes just a few minutes, and you should run a full system scan the first time you use it. From then on, you can use the Smart Scan option, which only checks recently changed files. Both the free and paid-for versions of Ad-aware are highly configurable, although the default settings are good enough for most normal situations.
