McAfee Internet Security Suite 2009 provides antivirus, anti-phishing, anti-spyware, personal firewall, and system backup/restore facilities - all of which are well-developed and better integrated than in previous versions.
Installing McAfee Internet Security Suite 2009 is easy, and you can depend upon the default configuration setting. Although MacAfee integrates well with Outlook and Internet Explorer, it is not yet compatible with Internet Explorer 8 (beta version). MacAfee does not provide an uninstalling program, so you will have to use Windows' 'Add/Remove Programs' option. After uninstalling, you will find some registry keys and directories still present in the machine, though less than in previous versions. McAfee is light on resources, so installing it does not slow down your machine. McAfee's venerated and much-used antivirus program helped this suite pass all major testing labs like ICSA, Virus Bulletin (VB) and West Coast Labs (W.C. L) as expected. In AV-Comparative's lab test, McAfee could catch 94% of all malwares and in the AV-test it also scored well, having few false positives.
When McAfee's new Active Protection (called 'Artemis') detects a new threat, it sends it to their AVERT lab's database and receives updates from there. McAfee's website also provides the latest information on different virus and hoaxes. McAfee supports Outlook, Eudora and Thunderbird, and all POP3, MAPI and web connections.
McAfee spyware has also got ICSA approval, and can detect all kinds of spywares, such as Trojans, keyloggers and adware. It effectively filters spam and provides notification on potential phishing schemes. For anti-phishing, it uses Mcafee's acclaimed SiteAdvisor tool, and also provides the important system utilities that generally accompany a good internet security suite, including a secure file shredder, and back-up/recovery tools.
The firewall monitors all the ports and communication channels in your computer. Locking up the firewall ensures blocking of all network traffic between your computer and any remote or Internet connection. Configuring and customizing the firewall is not easy, though, and at times does not give the expected results.
McAfee's interface is well organised, and all the tools are well integrated. You get all the tools related to security, utility and networking in one place. McAfee's home networking utilities are also helpful, although technical support needs improvement.
