Symantac is a reputable security products vendor, and one of the market leaders, but Norton Antivirus 2009 falls short expectations. In comparison with past products, Norton Anti Virus is comparatively lightweight, though still uses lots of resource. It is a fully featured antivirus and antispyware machine. The antivirus engine is strong but the same cannot be said about the antispyware tools. Norton still has the problem of freezing and slowing down the machine.
Norton antivirus has scored 100% in Virus Bulletin test Lab (VB100%) and cleared West Coast Labs tests. It is also ICSA certified. All this test result shows that Norton Antivirus 2009 is equipped to detect and remove most of the virus and malware your computer might handle. But the antispyware capability of Norton is still much less effective than the virus scanner. In Top Ten Review's test lab, it ate up the resources and slowed down the test machine, but in the PC Pro Lab test Norton Antivirus 2007 version showed less memory usage and only 50% CPU usage. In PC Pro Lab's malware test results were equally poor across the two platforms: a paltry 68% of malware was detected and removed, with many items missed. The scan time has increased because now the scanner scans only the files, which are at a risk.
Norton AntiVirus is irritatingly slow and sluggish on Vista, and simple operations take up much CPU time, while a full scan puts so much pressure on the machine that the mouse pointer becomes jerky.
The installation time has improved in this product. Installation in the previous version used to be a long process, but now it installs faster and the process is easy. Uninstalling Norton Antivirus does not remove all traces of registry entries and directories. The LiveUpdate program also has to be removed separately.
Norton AntiVirus's main features are as follows:
â?¢ Antivirus and anti-spyware engine.
â?¢ Rapid Pulse feature providing updates each 5 to 10 minutes
â?¢ Instant Messenger protection
â?¢ Locking of program settings
â?¢ Live chat, e-mail and telephonic support
Norton AntiVirus 2009 has a simple, friendly and easy-to-use interface, but it's too slow because of all the graphics.
Norton Antivirus 2009 is very easy to use, and its default configuration is sufficient for home users, but there are better packages out there for the price.
