Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 provides an easier to use interface, scans faster and has less demand on CPU and RAM than previous versions. Its malware and spyware detection capability showed above-average performance in PC Pro's Lab, where it scored 95% in malware detection tests and succeeded in catching 100% of phishing e-mails and 89% of spam, along with the Windows junk mail filter.
It has a strong firewall, which again performed acceptably. Out of 25 open ports on the test machine, only 9 TCP ports were detected as open. Generally, if a scanner scans your machine looking for vulnerable points, the firewall is supposed to send a warning, but this feature was absent in the case of this suite, and it also gave six alerts in the false positives test. However, the most serious drawback is that installation of the suite doubled boot time in the test machine. Some installation and interface bugs have also been reported by PC World.
Malware detection capability is good, but malware cleanup is not that impressive. In PCWorld's Lab it could clean up only 70% of changes imparted by malware infection to the computer's files and registry.
Overall, it has good proactive defense, and provides neat weekly reports on detected threats. The antispam tools allow you to block or allow specific senders, and label some e-mails as spam. The anti-phishing tools are also above average, but parental control is basic.
