Trend Micro Security Pro 2009 suite is a basic Internet security suite, which the bare bone essentials of a security product offered at a competitive price. It offers a home networking monitor, a two-way firewall, anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware, anti-phishing, web identity theft protection and parental control tools. Although this suite has all the basic essentials of an Internet security suite, its performance in different test labs has failed to be impressive in comparison with other high ranking contenders like Norton, McAfee, etc.
The antivirus tool in the suite has come out as an above-average performer, and could detect 100% of the viruses installed in TopTenReview's lab test. The real-time scanner is good, but slows down your machine. The virus scanner updates every three hours, and this setting can be changed for updates every hour. The antispyware does not scan web mails from clients like Yahoo! or Hotmail, and instant messaging attachments by default, you have to configure it for that. Zipped folders and files are also not scanned by default.
The firewall is easy to use, and effective, with four security levels: Home Network, Office Network, Direct Connection and Wireless Connection. You can also create a new profile with custom configuration.
In AV-Test Lab's malware test, Trend Micro Internet Security 2009 found 91% of the malwares and 88% of the adware in the September '08 test. AV-Comparative did not include this suite for testing.
Installation of Trend Micro is easy and to the point. It takes time, but does not require rebooting. The installation process does not include automatic updates; you will have to wait for updates due in the next three hours. Strangely enough, it updates during un-installation. Removing the program is cumbersome, and leaves traces of registry entries and files. The on-screen interface has been refined and improved in this version.
