VCOM SystemSuite 7 Professional is a suite mainly helpful in system maintenance and utility. It is an acclaimed, comprehensive suite that provides adequate safety for four areas of your personal computer: security against e-mail virus, spam, hacking and other malwares. It also provides a data recovery wizard.
This suite does not fair well as a security provider, however. In this version you find a NetDefense firewall, instead of the Sygate firewall of the previous version, and most test labs did not find it adequately effective in fighting present-generation Internet threats. The security tools have a large system overhead, which makes them difficult to use in machines with lower specifications.
The Quick Status central control integrates the collection of security tools - antivirus, anti-spam and firewall components - along with the system maintenance tools, but this integration is not yet completely synchronized as in other top-notch Internet security suites. In PC Pro Lab's malware test, the Mail Washer anti-spam feature could detect only 93% of spam correctly, with 1.8 % false positives. Not impressive.
The NetDefense firewall takes time to install and start up, and takes more than one reboot to start up properly. The antivirus and anti-spyware tools are from Trend Micro, with a direct link to Trend Micro's online database on viruses and other threats. Surprisingly, the VCOM antivirus and anti-spyware did not score as well as Trend Micro's similar tools in PC Pro's Lab tests. The firewall does not provide parental control.
The system tools in System Suite are really an impressive collection of 60 different system tools, for a modest price when licensed for three PCs. It covers every diagnostics and cleaning tool, including a disk defragmenter, a registry cleaner, a deleted file shredder, a warning system on hard disk failure and a rescue disk. Although as a system tool this suite is marvelous, it cannot yet be considered a total Internet security provider.
